Dsqaured2: An Ode to the Art of Transformation
Dsquared Presents a futuristic, but ultimatley unoriginal show.

Stepping into the world of Dsquared2 for their Autumn/Winter 2024 catwalk, one is immediately struck by the stark, almost clinical setting. The room, bathed in bright light, features imposing pillars reminiscent of a futuristic hospital. As the remix of "Flawless" pulses through the air, the stage is set for a unique blend of fashion and performance.
The pristine environment is an intriguing backdrop for the gritty, rugged aesthetic that Dsquared2 is known for. The first model steps out, and the Canadian trucker vibe is alive and well. This collection masterfully combines raw materials and heavy, almost dirty makeup to create the illusion of models emerging from a rugged wilderness into a futuristic setting. As models paraded down the runway, knit jumpers and oversized fur hats debuted, channelling a rugged outdoor spirit.
Then, the models approach a big white box that portrays the essence of a cryogenic freezer. The machine bursts with light when they step in, and the ‘same’ model is transformed into glamour, wearing long dresses, slick suits, and low necklines. Slinky fabrics contrast with distressed denim and are rugged for a cleaner look. The appearances are entrancing, as the makeup is clear, dark, and striking.
Through subtle but intentional details, the looks are cleverly tied together. The use of silhouettes is critical, as they knit and stitch the similarities of the twin models together through shape, allowing continuity between the transformations. Long dresses or oversized coats of garments entwine the twins with each other. Accessories reaffirm Dsquared2's position of seamless blending-together looks. These elements, symbolic of the Dsquared2 brand, highlight its essence and utilise skin as a seductive accessory, emphasising the brand's bold and provocative style.
Although the show does not show anything new about Dsquared2 as it reinvents its signature pillars, it plays into the founding elements of duality that Dsquared2 has built itself on. The use of twins is particularly cleverly highlighting the brand's twofold style. Famously, a set of twins, Dan and Dead Caten, founded the brand. This is why dual but similar ideals are coded into the Dsquared2s genes. The catwalk demonstrates how the brand can cater to any occasion, blending grit, glamour, and sexiness. While the show may not have introduced groundbreaking new concepts, it reinforced Dsquared2's position in the fashion industry as a brand that excels in blending contrasting styles. This collection serves as a reminder of the brand's roots and ability to reinterpret its core themes continuously.
As a spectacle, the #D2MetaMorph show is undeniably entertaining. The setting, soundtrack, and overall presentation captivate and hold attention. However, the collection falls short when viewed through the lens of fashion as an art form. The reliance on gimmicks and theatrics overshadows the actual design work. While the concept of duality and transformation is interesting, more emphasis was placed on the performance aspect rather than the innovation in fashion design. Regardless, I still enjoyed the show; not everything has to be a big statement, and Dsquared2 is not the brand to make a big statement that changes the world. The brand knows what it does best and, well, a bit of grit, glamour, and sexiness. So, is the show potent and important? No, not all at. Is it memorable? Hell yes.
